Kaiser Permanente Insurance Company
Kaiser Permanente is a relative newcomer to the insurance industry - especially when compared to some of the older companies like Prudential or The Hartford. But it has definitely made its mark. Kaiser Permanente was established in Oakland, California in 1945 as a managed care organization. From the inception of the company the emphasis would be on prevention. The concept came from Sidney R. Garfield, M.D. that it would be easier to care for your patients if you kept them healthy in the first place. At the time the care was considered revolutionary. This idea of prevention is still practiced today. Medical decisions are made by physicians while working with their patients. Kaiser Permanente strongly encourages physicians to openly discuss all options of health care and treatment with patients. The compensation for medical professionals is a different with Kaiser Permanente than with most other health insurance companies. Here the health plan premiums pay the Medical Group and then the Medical Group actually pays a pre-established amount (usually a salary) to the doctor. The goal is to get the medical professionals to look at the health care and not so much at the bottom line. Currently, Kaiser Permanente policies are only available in limited regions through out the United States.
